Of Trackless Slopes...

There's something tantalizing about the squeaky s-c-runch of dry new fallen snow.  I set out with extra bundling --two pairs of socks, two pairs of pants, two wool sweaters, gloves and wool mittens--for a quick walk this afternoon.  The weather has snapped cold on us with a bracing rosy-cheek sort of  tang we're not used to here.  It would have been an ordinary walk up through a wooded trail and around the loop and home except for...

Winter's glory!  Entering the woods with the branches topped deliciously with dollops of snow I had to slow my pace and stop for this picture and that one, and then another...

Glorious day!  The sky had turned blue and the winterscape brilliant.  My walk became a series of steps and stops to look again and click the shutter.  This was wonderful enough. But then the trail turned to skirt the foot of Scout Mountain.

IMG_7144

And I saw the trackless slope upward.... meaning I could be the first up the mountain in the snow.  You have to understand how this hike is transformed in the snow.  There are no longer jutting rocks, or mossy ledges,  only snow-capped trees and underbrush and  gently mounding snow obliterating the trail and inviting my footprints.   I love snow days on Scout.  How could I resist this alluring detour?  I thought, maybe I'll just go up part way and then circle back down...There'll be time for that... And without further thought we set our sights on the climb.  Good old Louie took the lead.  Dogs are so amazing.  They don't need to see the trail, they seem to have it memorized. Or perhaps they smell it? and off they go.  Huffing and puffing behind I had occasion to think what a sweet thing it is to have a Shepherd through life...when storms come and cover familiar trails, the Shepherd knows the way still and leads us forward... He goes ahead, alert for danger, forever with us and looking out for us.

IMG_7148

The hike did not disappoint.  Sub-freezing temp's couldn't begin to touch the heat generated in the climb.  The brilliant blue of sky, the sparkling white of snow, the silhouettes of branches trimmed in white...kept luring the camera from my pocket and slowing my steps... IMG_7146IMG_7157IMG_7154IMG_7150

...Until at some point I realized the sky's blue had faded and the sun was glowing peach and gold.

 IMG_7163    IMG_7162 IMG_7170

And what goes up must come down.  Picture-taking took a back pocket to just getting to the top!  And mental calculations, judging from the spot at which the sun hung above the horizon, suggested the direct descent down the face of Scout would be the most timely option for getting home,

IMG_7172

scary or not... here we come.  No pictures of this part.  The slipping, scooting, sliding, hollering at Louie to 'wait up!', slithering, shuffling, sitting! (oops) and finally the destination---the great green field, now a great white sheet.  And the shepherd, having led the way, now had abandoned his charge in his own urgency to make haste home to his dinner and bed!  Well, he hadn't quite abandoned.  His retreating figure caught my eye in time to hail him down and insist he accompany me home on his tether... By now the fiery glow of sun was spent, leaving just a haze of pink backlighting the wintry world.

My cheeks felt the glow instead in the bite of wintry wind.  And I was as eager as my dog to hurry home over the squeaking crunch of cast-off snow.

New Mercies

IMG_7073
We have returned to home sweet home after many miles humming down the road in rain, shine, snow and even a spit of hail...and I'm reflecting on all the mercies that were ours along the way...
Beauty of sunshine and of pre-dawn snow...

Sandtrucks that appear in the rearview mirror just when the pass seems impassable, and bravely lead the way.

Miles and miles of safe driving and long napping (mine), and free coffee  (Thanks McD's!) for those who must stay alert!
Feasting with family, pork-fest and turkey feast, crepes and cream--celebrating firstborn's birthday, an early American Thanksgiving and just being together....

Being Grandmom to the one with the up-stretched arms and hug-hungry heart who says "Up" in that winsome little way.

Kindness and wisdom seen in offspring now grown...

Never being too old to fulfill a dream

A daughter-in-heart that radiates acceptance of this new family of hers and continues to cherish my firstborn son unconditionally.

And I'm on tiptoes to see what new mercies tomorrow will bring...

Walking thankfully!

Just can't get enough of walking and gawking at all the loveliness...in surprising places above and below...Have been trying out doing some memorizing while I walk.  Right now it's David's Song of Thanks in I Chronicles 16 following the return of the Ark of God to its rightful place in Jerusalem...David actually appointed specific ones to have the job of singing songs of thanksgiving.  Now that's being intentional--an example that has served me well. So, even though American Thanksgiving is still a couple weeks away, we'll have a 'warm up' here this week  ( :

IMG_6935

Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon His Name;
make known HIs deeds among the peoples!

IMG_6940

Sing to Him; sing praises to Him;
Tell of all His wondrous works!

IMG_6955

Glory in His Holy Name;
Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice!

IMG_6960

Seek the LORD and His strength;
Seek His presence continually!

IMG_6965

Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness;
tremble before Him all the earth;

IMG_6943

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice,
and let them say among the nations,
"THE LORD REIGNS!"

Love Notes...

IMG_6825
The week began with finding love notes on the lawn...The same tree that whispers hushed lullabies all summer,  drops these beautiful speckled hearts in the fall.

A surprising number of sunny days this week prompted extra pedaling.  And this was a splendid day to go 'off road'.  The leaves along the trail were spectacular.  I still haven't gotten over how big the Big Leaf Maples make them!

Fall is the season for sailors--strong winds, but not too strong or cold to weather.  I was a good mate and went along one windy day for a wild sail.  Sailing has its glorious moments if you can get past the coldness and the nausea, induced partially by terror! On this afternoon I luxuriated with the wind in my face, head thrown back to watch the seagulls wheeling in a dapple-gray sky, catching wind of autumn's farewell--breathing deeply for the glory of the day.

Winds gusting to 35knots make for lots of 'tipping'.  Once Jim assured me that my body was not sufficient ballast to tip us right over I got 'into' it and took some live video hanging over the heeling edge. [He's got it posted on our website; if you're interested ask me for the link...] Looks so 'safe' on film...The highlight of the sail came when we looked out across the sea and saw what looked like mist rising, as though the ocean were making its own spray.  Looked like... a whale!! yes!  We watched it spouting, saw its back for a moment, saw more spouting, saw its fin... Our first whale!  And all the while the boat sliced and bounded through the rough seas-heading back to harbor.

"Chase Me" moors in Lund now, at the end of the Highway that passes our neighborhood on the way to the sea...

She's got lots of company here and is always tied up with some buddy.

I was glad to disembark and sip hot chocolate on a firmer footing while I watched  the fishing boats come in to sort their prawn.  Seagulls feasted and one lone young eagle came in for a 'catch'... but foiled my attempts
 at a decent picture..

And say, who's this 'mer-man' after?!IMG_6914

But all good weeks must come to an end and so must rambling photo blogs...Yesterday I went out walking for the sheer delight of another sunny afternoon.  And just had to stop and capture this unassuming gem standing quietly at the edge of a dark woods up at The Green Field park. I want to shine like that!  Quiet and steady, even in out of the way dim places...

IMG_6925

Passers-by no doubt wondered what there was to see at sidewalk's edge in this scraggly little cherry tree but the complementary colors of leaf and sky begged a longer look... What an artist God is...

"Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
Let the field exult, and everything it it!
Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD,
For He comes to judge the earth.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
For His steadfast love endures forever!"
