April Surprise!

The snow had all gone, returning the earth to its drab dead skins awaiting another season of warmth to liven it up. Cautious wisps of green were springing up on protected berms and in those spots where they will soon be unwelcome. And I spied a lone daffodil against the warm wall of the old Anglican church in town. Then came yesterday.

The world was obscured in a falling blanket of white.  Despite our having removed our snow tires and stowed our skis away it fell as though expected.  The good news was that it refused to stick.  The warmed damp earth refused to let it rest. There were just great puddles.  And a flurry of larger and larger flakes in protest.  And so we went to bed the landscape still dreary brown but the mountains freshly powdered.

We woke to this:

Now I am well aware that likely noone, including myself, is really hankering for more snow pictures!  I'd rather look at daffodils, crocuses, forsythia blooms or whatever is springing up where you are.  But since this is what I have to take pictures of here, this is what you get!

I had to chuckle at this sign so appropriately obscured.  It is announcing the street sweeping that is to commence this week.  But first for the snowplows!

Despite my preference for green and flowery at this time of year, I had a lovely quiet walk through the fresh powder this morning.

And I was glad I had not yet packed away my snow boots or wool sweaters!

Wherever you are, I hope these photos will incite you to look more closely at the beauty of spring around you, and maybe even to share a glimpse?!

Please don't feel too sorry for me, by day's end as I'm posting this, all this snow has largely vanished back to brown earth and we are feeling fortunate, as the word around town today is that Banff (just down the road) got a whole foot of snow!

Ripening Springtime

The sweetness of the wild rose...

The quiet of an early morning stroll on the Rail Trail listening to birdsong…

The  shimmer of little goslings preening in mellow evening sunshine…

These are the tokens of ripening springtime.

How sweet it is.

“…and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.  It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the LORD, and the excellency of our God.” Is.35:1-2

Still Mine

P3180244a

There’s no place to convalesce like home.  And no better time for it  than spring. In all honesty there hasn’t been much convalescing to do; my eye is fine.  But avoiding strenuous activity was what the doctor ordered so… have been trying to comply.  Does weeding count?!

It’s been a sweet thing to be back ‘home’ for my favorite of seasons, but a little bittersweet to see all the little wonders that will be sold with the house.

But for now, they’re mine:

The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, right?  And I am His. So….

April NEWs…

All new by spring’s morning light…

P1140348I slipped into my gum boots for a tromp out back to check on the skunk cabbage--sure harbinger of bears to come.

P1140350And on the way I got caught up on all the latest NEWs…

The willow’s coming out of mourning.

P1140357

Rhubarb is emerging, crinkly new, rousing hopes of mouth-watering desserts to come…

 P1140361

The bushy willows further back are bearing pussies…

P1140363

And the huckleberries have put on their dainties.

P1140373

P1140370macro

And yes, the skunk cabbage is up,

wafting it’s malodorous wake-up call to all the ursidae family far and near.

P1140367

We’re sure to have bears before long…
